Brooke Lounsbury is a holistic registered nurse who left the mainstream medical field in 2008 when she saw the current medical model was not about prevention. She is a public speaker, blogger and nutritional consultant who founded Health Begins at Home- “bringing health back home to you”. She has an interest in helping others to become as healthy as possible with as little money as possible using the holistic model. Her field of expertise before becoming a self-described “entrepre-nurse” was primarily in Home Health and Hospice and staff development.

 The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland that is located above the Adams apple. The hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) effect every cell in the body. The physiology of the thyroid hormone process is complex. Many nutrients, such as selenium and iodine play a crucial role in thyroid health. If even one of the several nutrients are missing the thyroid gland cannot function. This results in many systems in the body unable to do their tasks, from cardiac health to respiratory health and metabolic regulation to name a few. Without understanding the delicate interactions and nutrients required for a healthy thyroid, it is impossible to understand thyroid diseases and conditions.


Objectives


Upon completion the participant will be able to:

1. Explain the anatomy of the thyroid gland
2. Explain how tyrosine and iodine combine to make thyroid hormones
3. Discuss the hypothalamus pituitary negative feedback loop
4. Identify key nutrients needed by the thyroid
5. List thyroid lab tests done and what they determine

• Nutrients needed for proper functioning of the thyroid gland

• Thyroid perioxidase(TPO)antibodies
• Thyroglobulin
• Thyroglobulin antibodies
• Free T4
• Free T3
• Reverse T3
• Radioactive iodine uptake test
