What is the Most Important Characteristic in Elder Care?

What would you say is the number one characteristic that makes a successful and fulfilled nurse? Is it critical thinking skills, compassion, time management, communication, honesty, concern, or something else?

In my opinion, empathy is the number one characteristic above all others. How often do you put yourself in the place of your patients, their families, your co-workers, employees, or supervisors?

Whether you work in geriatrics or not, it is important to understand what it's like to be an aging adult since most nurses will care for an aging adult at least occasionally.

Take a moment to evaluate your own perceptions of the elderly and then watch “Behind the Old Face". If it causes you to think differently, brings an emotional response or gives you a better sense of empathy, please comment and share it so we can appreciate the elderly people we care for.
