23.01.01 - RULES OF THE IDAHO BOARD OF NURSING

TITLE 54
PROFESSIONS, VOCATIONS, AND BUSINESSES
CHAPTER 14
NURSES

The rules of the Idaho Board of Nursing do not specifically speak to LPNs working with IVs. LPNs in Idaho have a directed practice. They are directed by Licensed Professional Nurses, Physicians or Dentists. (IDAPA 23.01.01.460)

An LPN is held to the decision making model before accepting a delegated task. This can be found in the rules of the Board of Nursing. (IDAPA 23.01.01.400.01)

If IV therapy was not part of the LPNs basic education then how is it that they became competent to perform this? Can they demonstrate completion of an organized program of study including supervised clinical practice or equivalent demonstrated competency? Are there existing policies and procedures established by the employer that support this? Is it consistent with nationally LPN standards?

The licensed professional nurse who delegates to a LPN must follow the delegation model which can be found in the section noted above. The licensed professional nurse retains accountability for the delegated acts and the consequences of delegation. The section on deciding to delegate can be found in the rules (IDAPA 23.01.01.400.02).
